Schools across the United Kingdom have been forced to close down for a second consecutive day due to snow and ice chaos.

Thousands of classrooms were reportedly closed on Monday as an Arctic freeze engulfed Britain.

Pupils were set to work remotely owing to the closure.

Hundreds of schools remained shut on Tuesday, with others opting for later start times to ensure the safety of children and staff as they make their way in during daylight hours.

The Met Office has issued a yellow snow and ice warning covering northern Scotland and north-east England from midnight on Tuesday until noon on Thursday.
