Sexual Harassment: UNIZIK Commences Installation Of CCTV Cameras
The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has began the installation of Closed-Circuit Television cameras in the university over the allegations of sexual harassment.
According to reports, the equipment would be installed at severwl offices of lecturers and other strategic locations on the campus.
The rising cases of sexual harassment in the school are said to have informed the decision by the school management which is targeted at curbing the menace of randy lecturers at the institution.
The management of the university had some weeks ago, announced the removal of some lecturers indicted in the sexual harassment saga from their respective positions while some were suspended.
A source in the school confirmed that the majority of the lecturers were furious with the idea of mounting CCTV cameras in their offices.
She said, “The lecturers are claiming that the decision is an infringement on their privacy and a gross violation of their fundamental human rights to hold unhindered and uncensored discussions with their students.
“But the vice chancellor had insisted that there would be no going back on the plan and that discussions that should take place with students must not be in secret.
“The VC noted that lecturers were paid with taxpayers’ money and therefore the authorities should know or be privy to how lecturers discharge their formal duties.”
