Super Eagles Qualify For 2025 AFCON
The Super Eagles have secured qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with one match remaining in the qualifiers.
Libya, currently at the bottom of Group D, defeated Rwanda 1-0 in Kigali, ensuring Nigeria’s place in the tournament finals.
This result leaves Rwanda trailing the Super Eagles by five points with only one game left to play, making it impossible for them to surpass Nigeria’s points total. Even if Rwanda wins their upcoming match against Nigeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, on Monday, they cannot overtake the group leaders.
In their last outing against Benin Republic, the Super Eagles played to a 1-1 draw, solidifying their position as group leaders.
With one round of matches remaining, Nigeria tops Group D with 11 points from five games. They are followed by Benin Republic with seven points and Rwanda with five. Libya sits at the bottom with four points.
To advance, the Benin Republic must secure a win against Libya in their final game or rely on the Super Eagles to defeat Rwanda on Tuesday while avoiding defeat themselves.
The Super Eagles were runners-up in the previous AFCON, losing to host nation Côte d’Ivoire in the final.
Victor Osimhen’s goal on Thursday against Rwanda brings his tally to 23 for the national team, tying him with the legendary Segun Odegbami as the joint-second-highest scorer in Nigerian football history.
