Toke Makinwa Debunks Rumors Of Secret Marriage

Popular media personality, Toke Makinwa, has debunked rumors of a secret marriage that surfaced during her 40th birthday Thanksgiving party in Lagos. Reports had circulated on social media suggesting that Makinwa had quietly married entertainment executive Farouk Umar in a private ceremony held at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island. The rumors gained traction after a video of the pair dressed in white attire—Makinwa in a white dress and Umar in traditional “buba and sokoto”—showing close affection went viral online.

Addressing the speculation, Makinwa firmly dismissed the marriage rumors, describing Umar as her best friend. She humorously commented on the situation, saying, “On Obasanjo’s internet, they said I got married to this guy. This guy is my best friend. On Toke Makinwa’s internet, they said I married Farouk. Farouk, my friend, ore mi… this is my nigga and my friend, my brother, who wan marry you?” She further explained that Farouk had supported her through difficult times, which she deeply appreciated, emphasizing their strong friendship.

During her address at the party, Makinwa reflected on some of the personal challenges she has faced, particularly recalling her turbulent marriage to Maje Ayida. The pair married in 2014, but the relationship ended in 2017 following allegations of infidelity. Makinwa spoke candidly about the emotional toll the divorce had on her, describing it as one of the most trying periods of her life. She expressed gratitude to God for giving her the strength to endure the hardships, admitting that at one point, she felt like she “would die” when the marriage ended.

Makinwa shared her appreciation for her close friends who stood by her during those challenging times. In an emotional moment, she thanked God for comforting her when others abandoned her. “Jesus, you comforted me when my friends left me. Jesus, you saw me through a divorce. When I thought I was going to die, when I didn’t know if I was going to wake up the next day, somehow you held me together,” she said. Makinwa credited her faith for helping her navigate the difficulties and thanked her friends for their support, even when she struggled to be the best friend to them in return.

Despite the swirling rumors, Makinwa made it clear that she and Farouk Umar are just friends. She praised him for standing by her during tough times and reiterated that their bond is strictly platonic. This clarification puts to rest the recent speculations surrounding her personal life, allowing her to continue celebrating her 40th milestone with her loved ones.
