UK Issues 300,000 Visas To Nigerians, Cites Robust Bilateral Relationship

The United Kingdom has issued approximately 300,000 visas to Nigerians in recent years, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations, according to Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Montgomery described the relationship as “robust,” emphasizing Nigeria’s significant benefits from the UK’s post-Brexit migration policies.

Growth in Work Visas

Montgomery revealed a sharp increase in the number of work visas granted to Nigerians, rising from 10,000–20,000 annually a few years ago to 80,000–90,000 in the last two years. This growth, he said, underscores the UK’s commitment to fostering mutually beneficial migration.

The number of people getting work visas that go to the UK has gone from something like 10,000–20,000 six, seven years ago to 80,000–90,000 in the last two years,” Montgomery stated.

Nigerians now account for approximately 10% of all UK visas issued in the past two years, further cementing the strong relationship between the two countries.

Contributions of Nigerians in the UK

Montgomery praised the contributions of Nigerians in the UK, particularly in critical sectors such as social care. He described their roles as vital to the UK economy, showcasing the positive impact of the migration trends.

Student Visa Decline

While acknowledging a decline in the number of Nigerian students pursuing education in the UK, Montgomery stressed that the overall visa policies remain favorable for Nigerians. He assured prospective applicants that the UK visa approval rate remains high for those with proper documentation and evidence.

Strongest Visa Relationship

The envoy highlighted that the volume of UK visas issued to Nigerians surpasses Nigeria’s visa relationships with any other country. He noted:

The UK in the last couple of years has granted around 300,000 new visas to Nigerians, which far exceeds any other visa relationship which Nigeria has with any other country.”

Post-Brexit Opportunities

Montgomery attributed the favorable trends to the UK’s post-Brexit migration rules, which have created opportunities for skilled workers and professionals from Nigeria and other nations.

Conclusion

The UK’s visa policies towards Nigerians reflect the enduring partnership between the two countries, with increasing opportunities for skilled migration. Despite the decline in student numbers, the broader migration framework remains a testament to the UK’s recognition of Nigeria’s significant contributions across various sectors.
