Wizkid’s Early Life: How he got into music, and his early experiences in the Nigerian music industry
Wizkid, whose real name is Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, was born on July 16, 1990, in Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria. He grew up in a large family with twelve siblings. His interest in music began at an early age, influenced by his parents’ collection of Afrobeat and gospel music.
Wizkid’s journey into music started when he formed a group called “Glorious Five” with some of his church friends. In 2009, he caught the attention of Banky W, a Nigerian singer and record label executive, who signed him to Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) record label. This marked the beginning of his professional music career.
Wizkid gained prominence in 2010 with his debut single “Holla at Your Boy,” which became an instant hit in Nigeria and beyond. His unique blend of Afrobeat, pop, and dancehall elements set him apart. He went on to release his debut album, “Superstar,” in 2011, which solidified his status as a rising star in the Nigerian music scene.
In the early stages of his career, Wizkid faced challenges and competition in the highly competitive Nigerian music industry.
